RTA nod for more city bus permits Friday May 27 2005 13:34 IST http://www.newindpress.com/NewsItems.asp?ID=IER20050527031248&Page=R&Title=Kerala&Topic=0
KOCHI: The Regional Transport Authority has agreed to the proposal to issue additional 100 city bus permits in principle. As a first step towards this directive, District Collector Mohammed Hanish, who is also the RTA chairman, has sought a status report from the Regional Transport Office on the number of buses plying on city roads with city permit. As per state government norms, the number of buses plying on city roads should be 750. Of this, 630 should be in general quota and 70 in SC/ST quota. The remaining 50 buses are allotted to the KSRTC. According to details available with the RT office, 630 buses are operating service under general quota. But the authorities are clueless about the actual number of buses under SC/ST quota. The current effort of the District Collector is to ascertain the exact number of buses operating service under SC/ST quota. There were differences of opinion between the district administration and the Regional Transport Office over the latters decision to sanction additional bus permits in the city. However, district administration sources said it would accord priority to filling the permits under SC/ST quota before sanctioning additional buses in the city. The Ernakulam District Bus Operators Organisation has slammed the Regional Transport Authority decision to give permit for 100 more buses citing rerouting of buses through Kaloor-Kadavanthra road. District president NP Raju told reporters on Thursday that 100 buses would enter the city, each of them 10 times, and would result in greater congestion of city roads. The only way out would be to divert ordinary buses through MG Road, he said. ------------------------ Yahoo! Groups Sponsor --------------------~--> Dying to be thin? Anorexia.
