A piece of land remains a pipedream for these Dalits

KOPPA: Kachaga, Putta, Anna, Nagappa, Manja, Naga, Jatta and Jattappa, all residents of Vagale village, Koppa Taluk ended their mortal journey dreaming a piece of land, which the politicians had repeatedly promised to grant them.
But their dream too died with them.
There are 30 more people in Vagale village. Though they knew that Kachaga and others could not see their dream being realised, they have not stopped dreaming to own a piece of land, cultivate it and get a good crop so that they too can live upright and with self-esteem like the people of other communities in the village.
Special Component Scheme, a joint scheme of State and Central governments, had only made them dream for a better future. But it never helped them to live like others. Instead, they have become only subject of ridicule in the eyes of their neighbours.
This has been their mode of life since 1979. Had they been literates, they could have tried to enter into Guinness Book of World Records in a new category of appealing to the nethas of their region innumerable times without any result.
In 1979 these 38 families were given two acres of land each in survey number 145 of Thamadavalli village, next to Vagale. They levelled the land. In 1983 Horticulture Department gave them 60 coconut saplings each. Dalit families also planted 15 chikkoo saplings.
The then in-charge minister of district H G Govinde Gowda, under Special Component Scheme, planned irrigation facility by digging an open well next to Tunga river and to lay pipeline up to their lands.
A shed to accommodate two 15 HP pumps was constructed. Pipes were brought and trench was opened. These Dalit families felt heaven was just a few steps away.
They rejoiced the occasion. They dreamt to become self-reliant like people of other communities in their village. But, suddenly, work was stopped half way. Irrigation motor was damaged as it was not being used.
Coconut trees died due to lack of water. Cattle grazed other plants. The Dalits, who had dreamt of self-reliance, had to toil in others’ fields to eke out their livelihood. They became a subject of ridicule in the eyes of others.
