YSR favours SC status to washermen’s community

RAJAHMUNDRY: In a move that could benefit the 55 lakh-strong washermen’s community in the State, the YS Rajasekhara Reddy Government has written to the SC Commission recommending the inclusion of washermen in the Scheduled Castes list.
AP Washermen’s Co-operative Societies Federation chairperson M Anjaiah said here on Wednesday that the community would be happy to be in any category in the event of SC quota categorisation.
“We don’t mind whether it is A, B, C or D. What we want is constitutional protection guarantee for our community,” he said.
He said washermen were recognised as Scheduled Castes in 21 States.
In neighbouring TN and Kerala, Puturai Vannans (washermen) were included in SCs.
In the past, all the erstwhile State Governments had recommended the inclusion of washermen in SCs and the three-member Central Cabinet Committee also gave its assent to the proposal, Anjaiah said.
He said the APWCSF had forwarded proposals worth Rs 4 crore for advancing loans and Rs 5 crore for dobhi ghat construction ahead of the 2006-2007 annual budget of the State Government.
He also revealed that the federation was studying the proposal to introduce an insurance-cum-retirement scheme for washermen under which the washermen could get up to Rs 2 lakh on attaining 58 years.
