Starvation deaths: Dalits demand NHRC intervention

National Campaign on Dalit Human Rights (NCDHR) demanded immediate intervention of National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) and SC commission on the issue of starvation deaths and the social boycott in the settlement colonies at Idakkidam, Ezhukone.
Meanwhile the State Human Rights commission on a petition based on media reports on starvation deaths, directed the district collector to submit a report within one month on the conditions of people at the colony. People at the colony were reportedly suffering from starvation, penury, unemployment, and communicable deceases.
NCDHR State convenor R Prakash said here at a Press conference that the Revenue Department had allocated Rs 26 lakh for free ration to the residents and two third of the amount was not reached the beneficiaries. The Government should conduct an enquiry on what steps the district collector had taken in this matter, he said.
On the social boycott of Dalitrs at Chittayyam, Panayam colony he alleged that the police were openly tried to support the culprits. The police didn't arres even a single person for attacking Dalits and at the same time they had charged several serious cases against the Dallits. The SP should be punished for the lapses in his duty.
Social boycott is a serious human rights issue and a gross violation of the Constitutional rights, he said. The Madan Kavu which belonged to the Dalits for years was taken away from them and now they were not even allowed to enter the temple, he alleged. Children were not attending the schools fearing an attack.
