Yesterday there was a news in the papers and today's email carries
the same from our friend Gerard Oonk. The news is about a Dalit
woman from Bihar selected to address the UN for successfully
fighting drunkenness in the community.

When one reads the news it looks great that a Dalit woman has been
chosen to address the UN. However, when you compare your
experiences with what happens in the communities the subconscious
purpose of this choice becomes evident. In the villages when the
dominant caste people address Dalit gatherings they always bring
up the question of Dalits getting drunk as the primary cause of
their backwardness. There is a blatant attempt to shift the
responsibility to the Dalits themselves for all the indignity
heaped on them by the caste society. This is easily done by
pointing out to drinking.

This is not to deny the fact that some Dalit men do give in to
drunken behavior. But then we can find more dominant caste men
doing the same. Why select a Dalit woman for fighting against
drunkenness in Dalit communities. It does establish a dominant
paradigm. After all UN is a stooge of dominant forces as evidenced
in the case of Iraq and Iran and many other countries to come in
the future.

Whoever is behind such internationalization of drunkenness in
Dalit communities is definitely doing a big injustice to our
community that has taken already a lot of battering from 'good'
