Election: 250 dalits return

Thinnalur (Tamil Nadu), Feb. 25: If the approaching Assembly elections have filled up the common man's basket with all sorts of sops from the state government, they have also helped some 250 dalits of this impoverished village (less than a hundred km south of Chennai) to return home after leading lives of mendicants. They had been banished by a rival dalit group after a murder and subsequent clashes two years ago.

Thanks to the efforts undertaken by former legislator S.D. Ugamchand of the DMK and Mr Arunkunam Vinayagam of the Dalit Panthers of India, these dalits, belonging to 40 families, returned to their homes on Saturday evening, guarded by policemen.

"All these people will support our DMK, I am sure of that," beamed Mr Ugamchand. "But do not assume that I have intervened with the elections in mind. I just wanted to help them because they come under my constituency." "We are happy going back to our village, but then, we are also quite worried about our safety despite the police assurances," said village president K. Raman. The 83-year-old dalit leader recounted how he was beaten up and banished from Thinnalur by the rival group.
