DU goes for the made-easy formula

NEW DELHI: Simple is the word for Delhi University (DU) this admission season.

>From making its centralised pre-admission OMR form simpler to
providing its satellite images on the university website to guide
students to its counters, the DU administration has made the
application process, scheduled to start from June 1, easier.

General category aspirants will be required to fill in the Optical
Mark Reader (OMR) sheet but this year it won't come with a carbon copy
attached, as in the previous year.

"Last year, students had problems with the carbon-less OMR sheet as
the impression didn't come clear on the carbon copy.
This year, we have done away with the carbon-less OMR sheets and asked
students to get a photocopy of the original form done for their own
record while we will keep the original," said SK Vij, dean, students'
welfare.
However, SC/ST applicants need to fill in the centralised Intelligent
Character Reader (ICR) forms which will carry specific code numbers
for each college and course.

"SC/ST students with better marks will be given preference in their
choice of course and college. Once seats have been allotted to
students in the reserved category, no changes can be made. They should
should also carry their original caste proof and not of their
parents," added Vij. The university will conduct separate counselling
sessions for them and then allot seats.

The varsity has also included a separate box for the OBC category in
the form but the proposed 27 per cent quota for backward castes will
be considered only after a clear word comes from the Union government.

For the net savvy, DU has updated its website with a google map of the
university with both satellite and regular pictures.

It has links of websites of some other colleges so that students get
all the information through one website .

This year, the varsity has provided specific metro routes too in its
information bulletin map.

"The bulletin will contain a map of the city to help students locate
the colleges. The map will also show Metro routes to ensure that
students from far-off areas reach campus easily. Besides the general
information related to courses and colleges, the information bulletin
will also contain rules and regulations of the examination system and
norms related to migration followed in the ministry," said Vij.

Career counselling will be introduced in the open day sessions. The
office of the dean students' welfare will function as a nodal point
where students can come with all their grievances.

And after the admission process, the university is planning to give
freshers a smooth entry into colleges by taking the SC directive on
ragging very seriously. "We will ask the university proctor to send a
notice to colleges to abide by the RK Raghavan committee
recommendations on ragging," said DU vice-chancellor Deepak Pental.
