Mayawati releases 'Inquilab-1857'

LUCKNOW: While releasing the special issue of Naya Daur — Inquilab
1857 — chief minister Mayawati on Saturday said that official
publication had an important role in publicising government policies
and programmes and information of public interest.

She said that Inquilab-1857, published by the information department,
would inform younger generation about the contribution and sacrifices
of freedom fighters by information on various aspects of the first war
of independence.

She also congratulated the director of information and editorial board
for bringing out the issue. She said Inquilab would strengthen social
unity, Hindu-Muslim brotherhood and the Ganga-Jamuni composite
culture, besides the glorious past of the state.

Mayawati said that the spirit of religious and communal and castiest
brotherhood, witnessed during the first war of independence 1857, was
spearheaded by Mangal Pandey, Bahadur Shah Zafar, Begum Hazrat Mahal,
Rani Laxmi Bai, Jhalkari Bai, Uda Devi, Nanasaheb Peshwa and Tantya
Tope. She said these brave sons and daughters of India laid the
foundation of nation's freedom. Mayawati said that along with the
freedom struggle a parallel social revolution also took place during
that time.

The chief minister said that great men like Mahatma Jyotiba Phule,
Chhatrapati Shahuji Maharaj, Narayan Guru and Periyar gave a new
direction to this social movement by bringing a number of people into
the mainstream thus enabling them to enjoy the right to education.

She said that the struggle of these great men continued under the
leadership of Babasaheb Ambedkar and Kanshi Ram. The section that was
exploited for centuries had an political awakening owing to tireless
work of Kanshi Ram. Drawing inspiration from these great men, the
Uttar Pradesh government was moving ahead on the path of "Sarvajan
Hitay,
Sarvajan Shukhaya," to establish a society based on equality.

The special issue which was released by the chief minister is
dedicated to known and unknown, freedom fighters to commemorate the
150th year of the first war of independence.
