Basava Dal members protest

Staff Reporter

BANGALORE: Members of Rashtriya Basava Dal on Monday staged a
demonstration at Basaveshwara Circle here seeking a ban on Anudeva
Horaganavanu, authored by Banjagere Jayaprakash, which suggests that
Basaveshwara belonged to the Madiga community as against the popular
perception that he was a Brahmin.

They opposed the announcement of Minister for Kannada and Culture H.S.
Mahadev Prasad to form a committee of researchers/ scholars to look
into the issue.

They contended that there was no need for setting up of the committee
when the common man could understand the mistakes committed by the
author.

Some scholars had already said that there was no need to ban the book,
and this committee could also provide the same reason, they added.

Further, in a press release, the Dal has said that writers Chidananda
Murthy and M.M. Kulabargi, whom the Minister wanted to be part of the
committee, might not provide justice.

'Misleading'

It said: "Dr. Chidananda Murthy was misleading the public on many
issues in the recent past, while Dr. Kulaburgi does not have the
strength to stand by the truth."

Many writers had remained atheist who cannot understand religious
issues, and that they defamed religious leaders in the name of
expression of freedom, it added.

Later, a delegation led by Mathe Mahadevi of Basava Dharma Peetha,
Koodala Sangama, met Deputy Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa and
presented a memorandum seeking a ban on the controversial book.
