Muslims oppose quota Religious groups say no to caste benefits Hyderabad, June 20: Several Muslim religious bodies on Wednesday opposed the move of the State government to provide reservations to Muslims on the basis of caste. The Muslim organisations have issued fatwas (religious decrees) against reservations for Muslims based on caste. The Muslim United Action Committee distributed copies of fatwas issued separately by Muftis of Jamia Nizamia, Jamia Islamia Darul Uloom, Almahadur Aali-al-Islami, Darul Uloom Sabilusalam, Darul Uloom Rehmania and Tanzeem-e-Jafari. Committee convener Moulana Hameeduddin Aquil Hussami, Tammer-e- Millat president Abdul Raheem Quershi and Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi strongly condemned the State government's move. They wanted reservations to be provided on the basis of economic, social and educational backwardness and said the State's action was against the teachings of Shariat (Islamic jurisprudence). They said they had sought the opinion of various Muslim organisations with regard to the reservations on caste basis. Six institutions which issued fatwas opined "Muslims all over the world are equal amongst themselves. There is no distinction of castes, colour or race among them. Therefore, creating distinctions among them for reservations is improper under the Shariat." Moulana Aquil Hussami said "dividing Muslims in the name of caste will lead to resentment."
