Monday, October 13, 2008, (New Delhi)
Valson Thampu, principal of St Stephen's College, got a major relief
from the Supreme Court on Monday.

The apex court has upheld Delhi High Court order, which said the
procedure followed to appoint Thampu was valid.

Delhi University had challenged the High Court order in the Supreme Court.

Delhi University argued that the procedure followed by the St
Stephen's College to appoint Thampu is against Delhi University's (DU)
ordinance. Delhi University will have final say in the appointment of
the Principal of the St Stephen's College.

St Stephen's lawyer argued that DU order is not applicable to minority
institutions.

SC dismissed the Delhi University's appeal and upheld the rights of
minority colleges to adopt its own procedure to appoint principal.
