BANGALORE: The National Commission for Scheduled Caste and Sheduled
Tribe has directed the Karnataka Chief Secretary to file a status
report regarding the appointment of a non-Scheduled Caste and Sheduled
Tribe candidate as the president of the State Commission for SC/STs.

The state government had appointed MLA Nehru Olekar as the president
of the State Commission for SCs and STs. Rajashekar, an advocate, had
filed a petition in front of the National Commission for Scheduled
Caste and Sheduled Tribe challenging the appointment of Nehru as the
president.

Rajashekar contended that a Scheduled Caste or Sheduled Tribe
candidate with legal background should have been appointed as the
president of the State Commission as in the case of Human Rights
Commissions and Women's Commissions.

The National Commission allowed the petition and directed the chief
secretary to file a status report at the earliest.
