Dalit teenager tortured, killed; policemen face action
Lakhimpur Kheri/Lucknow, June 03: A dalit teenager was tortured and
killed allegedly over a petty dispute here, prompting Uttar Pradesh
government to suspend two policemen and order inquiry against three
senior police officials.

It is the second such incident involving a member of the community in
the state within a week.

Arjun, 19, had filed a complaint with the police apprehending threat
to his life. He was killed in Koraiya Sanjarpur village in Lakhimpur
Kheri, 134 kms from state capital, in the wee hours yesterday
allegedly over a dispute related to passage.

The killers later hanged his body from a tree to conceal the crime,
but the post mortem report revealed that Arjun was tortured and
killed.

"Sub-Inspector Sanjiv Kumar and constable Rama Shanker Singh were
suspended on the directives of the Director General of Police Vikram
Singh on charges of dereliction of duty," Home Department officials
said. An inquiry against the SP, ASP and Circle Officer will be
conducted by anti-corruption organisation.

Singh also ordered an enquiry as to why preventive measures were not
taken despite Arjun's complaint. Top police officials visited
Sanjarpur village and met Arjun's family.

Seven policemen were suspended yesterday in connection with murder of
a dalit person over a land dispute, in Azamgarh, about 300 kms from
Lucknow.
