Sotomayor affirms affirmative action
Judge Sonia Sotomayor, President Obama's Supreme Court nominee, may
well be called the "affirmative action poster girl." There is no doubt
whatsoever that she always will rule on the side of minorities - a
prospect fraught with danger, as your editorial noted vis-a-vis the
possibility of giving felons the right to vote ("The franchise for
felons," Opinion, Friday).
Judge Sotomayor admits to having been shaped by her experiences in the
Bronx, but she cannot deny that her pursuit of education and wealth
has reduced the Bronx's influence to no more than a memory. Mr. Obama
selected her because of her support of affirmative action, which
pushes back the advancements of blacks and other minorities.
The Supreme Court needs justices who can be rational, objective and
fair in their rulings. It also needs justices who can and will protect
the Constitution.
