First Dalit Sagarmatha expedition campaign ends

KATHMANDU: Preparations for the first Dalit Sagarmatha Expedition
campaign have been completed.

The expedition is led by Climbers Club Nepal and is being organised to
mark the Visit Nepal Year 2011.

The Club President Dagombu Sherpa had successful organised the
inclusive women Sagarmatha expedition in 2008.

Youths from the Dalit community with sports background and physically
and mentally strong have been targeted and training on mountaineering
shall be organised for them, the Club has said.

The entire campaign is expected to cost around Rs. 30 million.

Speaking at a program organised to shed light on the campaign here on
Monday, Chairperson of National Dalit Commission, Bijul Kumar
Biswakarma, CA member Santoshi Biswakarma and Vice-Chair of the
National Committee for the upliftment of the Depressed, the Oppressed
and the Dalit Community, DB Pariyar were of the view that the
expedition campaign to the world's highest mountain would give a very
positive message to draw the attention of the world towards the plight
of the Dalits in Nepal, and called for cooperation of all sides
concerning in making the campaign a success.
