Structured Reveries
I drive into my first horizon
Up the deserted road
The puppets are still indoors
Preparing to play the ordained role
It is the Holi of this unholy year
I reach my destination of the moment
Stub out the fire and walk in
On to the structured path
Of my morning reveries
And the puppets pass
One by one
Two by two
Group by group
Familiarly unfamiliar
I walk on
A temple happens
One of the many
The passing puppet folds his hands
Shuts his eyes and opens them
Looks around
And resumes walking
The performance is called praying
The man leads regally
Her head bent in hidden unease
She looks back and tugs at the leash
Of the petulant pet trailing
She cannot or will not see
The invisible leash that needs no tugging
The master knows his trigonometry
His calculation precise
Of slack that is safely sufficient
I see the strata well marked
The degrees of slack vary
The underlying trigonometrics doesn't
But puppets all, are anyway strung
With situational slack
In unknown bondage
To the nonexistent master
They perform their daily waltz
With the lies of living
I speak of no unanimous truth
It is universally individual
Lying in ignominy
Brushed away into hiding
Lest it interfere in the puppets' dance
Holi or not
Such revelation in my reveries
Can make me merry
I accelerate my feet
Impatient for keyboard or pen
My fingers twitch
My lips smile
At the laughing me.
