You, an old guard? Don't make me laugh! Thanks for the long, thoughtful (and thought-provoking) reply. Yes, you read me correctly, more-or-less. In these Groups, all readers are welcome to change anything written by someone else. It works in the same way in all the groups. Along with the "Wow! Great poem! Thanks for sharing" kind of observation, comments to make the poem better, are legion. I will give you random links from a few sites that I frequent in order to show the kind of responses one is most likely to get depending upon the nature of the group. http://groups.msn.com/themustardbastard/general.msnw?action=get_message&mview=0&ID_Message=2410&LastModified=4675519834026228032 http://groups.msn.com/Blackwidowswindowofpoetry/general.msnw?action=get_message&mview=0&ID_Message=58796&LastModified=4675512198812805703 http://groups.msn.com/NeoBeatHotel/general.msnw?action=get_message&mview=0&ID_Message=14982&LastModified=4675515094178876709 Here's an interesting discussion. (Note: a recommendation is given by clicking on the yellow heart and the numbers by its side show how many people have liked/recommended the poem) http://groups.msn.com/themustardbastard/general.msnw?action=get_message&ID_Message=2471&ShowDelete=0&CDir=-2 http://groups.msn.com/Blackwidowswindowofpoetry/general.msnw?action=get_message&mview=0&ID_Message=58690&LastModified=4675511251584933443 Of course, as these few examples show, people may or may not accept the changes. That would put too much responsibility on the reader and having the freedom to make changes, make nasty comments or complimentary ones is already considered too chaotic by many. Authorial control is not surrendered totally, but he/she loses significant power over the work once it is out there. I believe, it is very different from (not worse than) the organised, productive, collaborative process that you have in mind. Perhaps this stems from, what you rightly pointed out, the sheer vastness and energy of the simultaneity that affects the poem. You are correct when you say that the "myth of the poetic genius" is a very recent phenomenon, but you may also remember what Plato said about "divine frenzy" (whatever his reservations about poets and their ilk). Naturally, the question of orality and the long history of improvisation and interpolation, especially in the oral tradition, is something that cannot be evaded. But my work is on the written form of poetry, or rather, engages with the print value of poetry. Print, many of us forget, created as much a ruckus in the history of poetry publication (recollect Blake's insistence on his "relief engravings" or Tennyson's dislike of the fact that he was a bestselling poet). All revolutions (real or otherwise) come with their own baggage of fears and anxieties. However, you are preempting me. I don't recollect talking about a revolution. ;) The point that you make about poetry on the net and off it as being similar is problematic for me. There are substantial cognitive differences between reading and experiencing a poem on a page and on a computer screen, but let's keep out of that dangerous space, for now… Nitoo. ________________________________ Insta predictions!
