David is definitely feeling low at the moment, so I won't tell him...But I doubt he'd care either way. As he says, "I am not precious about my poems", and is very thick-skinned when it comes to receiving critiques. These are not his best poems, just some of my own favourites...So, perhaps my choice is at fault.
Publication is a loaded word and I didn't use it here in any sense apart from the absolutely ordinary. For instance, the way Jeet Thayil's poems were circulated before his reading at Sarai ("Please note that Spiderman is unpublished new work and thus NOT for general circulation outside this list.") or the way you yourself posted your poems here ("Please note that Ode to Prose and Deathwish are due for publication later this year and so are not for general circulation outside this list, for the moment.") can be called the "absolutely ordinary" sense of the word. I put in that sentence for David's poems only because they are not mine and I have no real authority over them.
My own, very subjective (and I am certain, 'unlawful') opinion about publication would be the original sense of making something publicly known. If a certain number of people are reading and talking about your poems in any kind of public space, then rest happy! You've been published! Even if a single unusual metaphor remains etched in the memory of someone who read your poems, doesn't matter where, that to me, is imprint enough.
