New members and a renewed plan of action to give the literary body a
new lease of life

The United Lodge of Theosophists, which had asked PEN, the popular
literary body in Mumbai, to vacate its ground floor premises on
grounds of "inactivity" has now asked the PEN to occupy its premises
on the second floor to resume their activities.

PEN secretary Ranjit Hoskote says, "The president of the United Lodge
of Theosophists, V Ramakrishnan has been gracious enough to allow us
to use the second floor." Hoskote continues that the PEN committee
"went through a lot of introspection" and has now inducted four new
members in the executive committee. This, the PEN feels will save the
literary body from going through a phase of "inertia" that it
underwent in the last nine months.

Literary organiser and activist Aspi Mistry, writer Sampurna
Chattarji, architect Savio Lobo and journalist Ronita Torcota are the
new executive committee members who will participate in PEN work.
Earlier, mostly only Hoskote, Jerry Pinto and Arundhati Subramaniam
were handling this. Hoskote had earlier admitted "their being busy
with their individual careers" had led PEN activities taking a
backseat.

Additionally, at an executive committee meeting, a decision was also
taken to revive their journal The Indian PEN -- which has not been
published since 1998.

The group is also planning future activities. Ronita Torcato adds,
"The committee has decided to hold a memorial reading of Dom Moraes'
poetry on June 6. It also plans to have more readings, discussions and
novelists, writers and experts visiting PEN from time to time." They
also plan to have a strong membership drive for PEN to increase its
visibility.

"Things are looking up," said an optimistic Hoskote, who added that
the task of handing over a section of books to the University of
Mumbai has been accomplished, while the other books have also been
transferred to the second floor. Let's hope that the ink in this PEN
will never dry up!
