This is Prasad, 25, based in Bangalore. I am interested in poetry,
both writing and reading. The Zest carries informative messages
on poetry, and it feels good to be subscribed to it.

The latest poet I have been reading is Nazim Hikmet.
What I like about his writing is that he is rebellious
and has a sense of humor mixed with it. He is didactic, too.
I liked his thoughts on free verse:

"Tonight I am going to be a street singer with a bad voice".

(Incidentally, he introduced free verse in Turkish literature.)

I admire structured verse, (have started this recently, though)
and it is inspiring to read ancient Dravidian literature- religious
poetry. What humiliates me the most is that the poems have
been spontaneous "outpourings" and not mentally prepared, and
most of it adhere to strict structure!

I don't write strict structured verse myself. I have been interested
in poetry for the last 4 years. I believe that art sustains life
and teaches one that he is never a cent per cent. But why poetry
and not any other form of art? I have to arrive at an answer
by exploring poetry further.

Bye for now,
Prasad

Nazim Hikmet below:

Living is no laughing matter:
you must live with great seriousness
like a squirrel, for example-
I mean without looking for something beyond and above living,
I mean living must be your whole occupation.
