Hi Rajan,

Welcome. The sonnet is a form that is, for various reasons, very dear
to my heart and practice: writing in it acts as a tight embrace, a
safety net, in times of extreme emotional distress. So form is
something I take very seriously, as a kind of spiritual vehicle almost,
and it would be very good to hear more about yr research into that--
what aspect or part of the continuing evolution of the sonnet are you
looking into for yr thesis?

You may be interested for your research to look into this interview with
young Ben Lerner about his new book of sonnets:

And some sonnets by Lerner:

--which begs the question, are they really sonnets?

But I see you neglect to mention metre in your list of neglections-- why
do so many Indian so-called poets abhor metre? Please do not tell me it
is because metre is not authentically Indian, we've already had that
discussion here.

And of course, form is just the beginning of the possibility of poetry--
just because one has mastered rhyming and counting beats, like a game of
precise tennis, it somehow still does not mean that one is a poet yet.
In the US, there has recently been a group calling themselves the "new
formalists" (as if they were the only ones practising form, as if form
had ever been out of style among the best poets) which includes such
hopelessly bland and boring-- rhythmically boring, too-- right-wing
poets like Dana Gioia. There is such a thing as death by iambic pentameter.

Cheers, V.
