OBSESSION At first it was a mere profession. To put out a few days' baby-life And then her fingers itched , She improvised ways to do away with. A little salt to build up the pressure To burst blood vessels; a grain of paddy particularly, the husk to block or rather clog the bronchial tubes; not to mention the age old sap of the kalli plant-killer milk: more interesting ,to let the she child lie twenty-four hours in the open night sky , open to pneumonia. And the bonus thrill of the power of killing and disposing off baby-corpses in Dalda tins floated into the river or well, bobbing in the country cousins of the famous Ganga--she is the much sought after mid-wife, wiping the sweat of her deeds in the pallav of her sari; no soliloquy like the lady of Macbeth. She eases her conscience with the thought of having stifled the miseries of a female child in its infant stage, so no dowry deaths.
