Dear ZEST Poets and Poetry lovers, I work for DNA (Daily New and Analysis), a new national paper that launched in Mumbai recently (circulation 3 lakh already). I write for a weekly arts and culture page appearing on Saturdays called `Salon' and edited by Meenakshi Shedde.
The page features a column of haikus and limericks where we publish readers' contributions. The haikus must follow the traditional 5-7-5 syllabic count. We also publish a 100-word non-fiction piece titled `Brief Encounter' on insights readers have had following life- altering experiences. We pay Rs 500 for each piece published—haiku, limerick or Brief Encounter. We would be delighted to have contributions from established, aspiring and not-yet poets. I had always been the class clown. Everyone always laughs at the class clown; few befriend her. When I complained to my friend, she said, "How else would they laugh, silly!" So I did an impersonation of my stern, Std X chemistry school teacher. Peals of laughter spilled from her, even though she hadn't attended my school. Humour, I realised, was a gift to be shared.
