This is my sibling poem...though it is also about my daughter, and her late father.
I really liked Siva's poem. It observes without being judgemental.
HAND-ME-DOWNS
I was the eldest child;
My clothes were new.
My sister wore them after me.
My sister said to me,
I hated wearing your clothes.
When I wore your
clothes
I was not me.
I wore your skin
Next to my skin.
I had never worn my sister's clothes.
My skin was my skin.
I did not understand this
Until he died,
And I wore his shirt
So that his skin
Would be next to my skin.
But it was not the same:
I chose it, she did not.
Now I sometimes wear
My daughter's clothes,
And she mine.
Though our skins touch,
We remain unchanged:
I am I, and she is she.

APPA
WHEN Palghat uncle came home
with a towel in his armpit , Appa said,
"come in, sit down. You see these days
I am very busy, I take two buses to the city,''
Then Appa said, ''when Ambazhapuzha uncle comes he brings
us pedas, jack fruit, plantains."
Appa is like that - simple, straight forward
Four years ago Appa built a house.
He said, " You see I am a man,
so I can stand on the sun and supervise"
Mother told him, "don't forget to put
concrete rings for the well"
Appa said, "O.K. O.K.', and took a nap, and now
Oh! how well our well overflows.
Last week we all went to Swaminathan's
To view his daughter for bride.
Swaminathan said "I am I.A.S., also big Tamil poet",
So Appa got very nervous.
He started playing crab
With somebody's false hair lying on the chair.
We all tried to catch his eye
But nothing could make him put it down.
Appa had already bungled.
Appa is like that simple, shy and masculine.
