Here's your trivioid for the day; I just heard this on the radio.
Newfoundland has just changed their USPS/Canada Post joint
state/province/territory designator, effective today, from NF to NL.
That's supposed to reflect the term Newfoundland and Labrador." NF
always did include Labrador, but Labrador, on the mainland, is several
times larger than the island of Newfoundland proper, but with a much
lower population density (Happy Valley-Goose Bay is the largest place
there, where there's a Canadian air force and air rescue base). QC
(Quebec) was against the change in the *official* name of Newfoundland
to N&L because they don't accept the Privy Council decision on the
Labrador-QC boundary in the north, so they feel this is a purely
political move on the part of the Newfoundland government.

I find it confusing because it's also the ISO 2-letter code, as well as
the EU postal designator, for the Netherlands. But these are always
controversial. When our new, 3rd territory of Nunavut was created, the
proposed postal
designator was NU, to differentiate it from NT (Northwest Territories).
It was then pointed out that NU is also the French word for nude, so
(probably with upcast eyebrows and sighs of exasperation) the
USPS/Canada Post's joint
committee threw up their hands and said NT would be used for both the
Northwest Territories and Nunavut.

“We do not think that there is an incompatibility between words and
deeds; the worst thing is to rush into action before the consequences
have been properly debated…To think of the future and wait was merely
another way of saying one was a coward; any idea of moderation was just
an attempt to disguise one’s unmanly character; ability to understand a
question from all sides meant that one was totally unfitted for action.”

Peloponessian Wars”
