Well Paul, I had not heard the one about evil kings celebrating birthdays
vis a vis birthdays are bad, but I have had a couple of students in my
classes who are JW. They actually have a pamphlet to give to teachers of
public schools on having a JW child in a classroom. The reason listed
there is that they only celebrate Jehovah/Jesus--but not at Christmas.
It is supposed to be an all-the-time thing.
The young man I have right now will stand for the pledge, but will not
say it. He looks at something else while he is standing there.
One gal was in my g/t classes for 3 years, and any party the kids wanted
to have, she could not participate in. We made turkey cookies once for
Thanksgiving, and she, instead, made a brown and orange flower. When she
was in 6th grade, her mother wouldn't let her even stay in my LA class as
we read Dickens' "A Christmas Carol"--simply because it had the word
Christmas in the title.
Her parents lavished gifts on her all the time, but she was so screwed up
in the head, they finally had to send her to private school. She was in
counseling most of her middle school years. She wanted so bad to be a
part of the "norm". I always felt sorry for her. Still do.
