I just don't want to do it that way. I'm passing it as a parameter, and it has just 
got to happen :)

Look at the timeobject.
You can either...
<dtml-var "ZopeTime()" fmt="%a">
...or...
<dtml-var "ZopeTime().strtime('%a')">

Something like that, please, folks.
