I agree with all of that.  Another small caution concerns the use of 
the & operator.  That is quite easy to implement in a notation program, 
but much harder in a program which plays or converts to midi.  This is 
particularly the case if you want to do some kind of visual animation 
such as highlighting each note as it's played.
