Riding the Range refers specifically to the weekend cowboys of Rochdale, Lancashire, a gritty northern town.  Back in 1975 folk singer Mike Harding had a top ten hit with a song called Rochdale Cowboy.  There's still a lot of cowboys in Rochdale.
