Have you tried the authz.tld taglib that comes with the project?
If not, you can use this to get the username <authz:authentication operation="username"/>, although I am not sure what happens when the user is not logged in as this is located only in the secured portion of my application ...
I do this to display links only to certain roles in my schema <authz:authorize ifAllGranted="ROLE_USER"> </authz:authorize>.
You can read about the taglib in the Acegi reference documenation at www.acegisecurity.org/docbook/acegi.pdf in section 1.7.4.
