Thanks for the replies. Two more questions... 1) When the activity is started from the main activity, I would want the user to click a button to indicate they have finished, and to return to the initial activity again. What's the best way to ensure that the original one is displayed as before?
2) My original question was actually more directed towards the device, rather than from a programming point of view. I was wondering how, on the device, you can see what is running - like for example in Windows where you can see all the applications in the taskbar, or even the list of apps in the task manager.
