One way around this is if we use the 3D logo and the when the boot process comes that far we go over to a animated version of it. In that way we have a nice boot sequence without (for non nerdy people ugly) messages and we have a animated background to show people that things is loading. One alternative for the loading animation would be some sort of loading bar. If we can have animations that we can control in some way.
