Positive usibility certification for Munich's Linux client

"According to the German press release below, Munich's Linux client "LiMux"
just got a positive certification from TÜViT regarding its usability.
The Linux client meets the requirements of the standards DIN EN ISO 9241

this brought down loading time from over 15 minutes to 7 seconds, which
is by factor 128 or more."

those unwilling to make the leap to Office 2007—will find
OpenOffice.org 2.2 well worth evaluating because, as the suite offers
a good solution for cutting software costs while expanding platform
options and minimizing compatibility issues."

WordPerfect filters improving
=============================
"The import of embedded pictures is one of the most overdue features
in our WordPerfect(tm) converter. So, I jumped on the task when this
opportunity came. And fortunately, not everything had to be coded from
scratch. Ariya, in the frame of a Google Summer of Code project gave a
decisive push to libwpg and he has kept working on improving it."

OpenTaal Publishes Dutch Word List
==================================
"Since the end of 2005 the project OpenTaal has worked to improve and
extend an existing open source Dutch word list. The approved word list
contains more than 140.000 keywords. The word list is available in
packages that can be installed in OpenOffice.org, Firefox and Thunderbird.
The approved word list is available under a free license (LGPL) and may
be used by open source projects."

ODF conversion with Ant
=======================
"In case you did not know, it's quite easy to modify ODF files using
Ant scripts. Here is the screenshot of a testdoc.odt file that includes
some information which I want to remove with a script. As you can see in
the screenshot, the file contains change tracking information, a line
that is marked with a style sheet called "Confidential", a phone number
and an email address. I want to remove all these pieces of information
with a script, so that other people can't see them anymore."

OpenOffice.org API Tutorial
===========================
"A useful feature for many business applications is functionality
allowing the user to generate reports from data in an application.
Spreadsheets are ideal for this purpose. Not only does a spreadsheet
lay data out in a structured, scanable format, but it also gives the
user the opportunity to quickly and efficiently perform calculations
on data. As it happens, the OpenOffice.org API exposes a very wide
range of classes and methods that let you, the developer, integrate
the OpenOffice.org spreadsheet application, called Calc, into your
application. A simple click of a button in an application can start
up OpenOffice.org and transfer the application's data to a
customized spreadsheet."

DTP with OpenOffice.org
=======================
"Draw and Writer have similar tools for positioning text, but Draw is
better suited for text mixed with graphics or for highly variable pages,
while Writer is designed for text-heavy documents with minimal variation
in the pages. Both lack some of the fine controls of a high-end layout
program, but their features are complete enough that either can be used
to produce professional-looking work.
...
Despite some limitations and omissions, both Draw and Writer are more
than adequate for many desktop publishing tasks. Several publishing
houses, including No Starch Press, have experimented with using Writer
as their basic layout program -- a move that saves time, since writers
can work in a standard template that designers do not have to reformat
before sending books to the printer."

Supported compilers for building OpenOffice.org
===============================================

"With milestone SRC680 m218 SunStudio 12 enters the list of supported
compilers for building OOo. Actually the only change needed was to add
a SunStudio 12 test to configure. This is amazing, considering the
amount of new features and changes which went into the latest
SunStudio version on one hand and the diversity of the OOo code base
on the other hand."

German government considering ODF mandate
=========================================
"According to the German article below, which is a summary of a panel
discussion at the LinuxTag event in Berlin, the governing coalition in
Germany is considering a mandate for open standards in general and ODF
in particular. Key goals are improving the competitive situation and
strengthening the position of smaller companies. According to the
article, the governing coalition sees ODF as a standard that can help
to increase competition in the office productivity market. Big players
should not be able to dictate the market."
