Registration opens for the OpenOffice.org Annual Conference

Please note we have now opened registration for our annual international
conference OOoCon 2008, to be held in Beijing, China between 5th.-7th.
November. This OOoCon is a double first - it's the first OOoCon to be held
outside Europe, and it will also see the biggest concentration of
OpenOffice.org developers ever assembled in one location on the planet.

Survey says: Firefox, OpenOffice leads in open source deployments

"The open source productivity suite OpenOffice has been found on 45% of
the Linux and Windows machines scanned for the ongoing survey, first
launched by open source software vendor OpenLogic just over six months ago.
However, deployment of OpenOffice (73%) is much greater among
participants' personal computers than in the businesses where they work,
acknowledged Kim Weins, OpenLogic's VP of sales and marketing, in an

ISO OOXML support criticised

"THE STATE IT organisations of six countries have published a
declaration questioning the neutrality of the ISO (International
Standards Organisation).
Representatives in Brazil, South Africa, Venezuela, Ecuador, Cuba and
Paraguay issued their angry manifesto in response to the ISO's recent
approval of Microsoft's Office Open XML (OOXML) document format."

"ISO 26300 has been established as a National Standard in Ecuador as a

ODF APPROVED AS SWEDISH NATIONAL STANDARD

The Swedish Standards Institute has officially approved ODF as a
national standard (SS-ISO/IEC 26300:2008). Sweden now joins Brazil,
Croatia, Italy, South Korea, and South Africa as countries whose
national standards bodies have formal approved ODF.
