Steve Ballmer in an interview with Gartner Analyst Neil McDonald

[Google Apps] "don't have the best word processor or spreadsheet we compete with; we get more competitive pressure from OpenOffice and StarOffice than we do from those guys,"

A Survey of Open Source Surveys

Treat yourself to a suite alternative: OpenOffice.org 3.0
==========================================================
"OpenOffice.org 3.0 is a great suite of office productivity applications (word processor, spreadsheet, presentation & database) that's very similar to Microsoft Office in function, and very different in price."

OpenOffice Hits 3.0: Can It Challenge Microsoft?
================================================
"The office suite, which provides word processing, spreadsheet and presentation applications, has long been among the most heavily used applications on users' desktops. For much of the Windows-centric world, that suite is Microsoft Office, but for open source users, more often than not, the choice is OpenOffice.org (OOo)."

OpenOffice 3.0--No longer an alternative
========================================
"It's been quite some time that OpenOffice was viewed as an alternative to Microsoft Office. But the latest release of OpenOffice version 3.0 seems to be pointing to a different direction. It is ready for primetime, to compete head-on with Microsoft Office."

Office without the MS
=====================
"I never took to MS Office 2007. Having used earlier versions of MS Word for years, I was frustrated when I couldn’t easily find the menus or commands where they used to be on its newfangled ribbon interface. I also disliked that its applications wrote by default to a file format that was unreadable by earlier versions of MS Office."

OK, now OpenOffice is definitely good enough
============================================
There is a reason that the OpenOffice.org 3.0 servers are struggling to keep up with demand. OO.org 3.0 really is a serious upgrade over version 2.4

First Look: OpenOffice.org 3.0
==============================
At first glance, the suite seems like a more polished OpenOffice.org 2.0. Many of the shortcomings present in older versions of OpenOffice.org have been fixed to some extent. For this review, I tested OO3 in a virtualized Windows XP environment.

Version 3.0 of OpenOffice.org's free office productivity suite was launched in mid-October and, while not a ground-breaking release, it builds on an already mature software package to provide even tougher competition for Microsoft's Office suite in the office productivity suite market.
