WASHINGTON - A CIA operative claims in a lawsuit that the US bombing of the Chinese Embassy in Belgrade in 1999 could have been avoided if his boss had checked sources with firsthand knowledge of the Yugoslav capital. The 46-year-old operative of Russian origin, identified only by the pseudonym Mitford, claims he is among mid- and lower-ranking agency employees 'blamed falsely' for the mistaken bombing, which killed three Chinese journalists. The US called the attack a mistake caused by faulty intelligence and use of outdated maps. The CIA said it fired one official and disciplined six others. The lawsuit was filed in 1999 in the US District Court in Washington.
