I can't speak to everyone else's experience, but at AOL, we haven't yet done enough testing to consider the head (which contains the work for the eventual 4.1) to be production-ready (but that doesn't mean that it isn't.)
We are currently using 4.0.1 - tag: aolserver_40_r1 - in production and it is working great. It is a branch off of 4.0 and contains the shutdown fix. I will see about getting this up on sourceforge as the latest tar distribution. We are in the midst of some organizational changes at AOL, resulting in a suspension of our participation in activities like the Chat (although there is no reason it can't still occur) -Elizabeth C.
