The car my daughter just bought has a broken glass cover on that unit. Anyone have one that needs a good home for a reasonable price (less than $125-140) ? And while on the topic of this E34 - question about the HVAC fan control - my daughter said that when she turns the middle (fan speed) know over past "12 O'clock) to any of the 1,2,3,4, numbered settings, all the illumination of the HVAC control panel goes dark - is this normal? A lot depends on where you are and what kind of winter weather you expect and what balance of raw snow/ice go you want to wet/dry performance. I know what I have found works fro me and som ethat don't. I am running GreenDiamond Inari's 215/55-16 for winters on stock 16" x 7" BMW rims on my 96 318ti for winter. I love them, though many may doubt using a remolded tire on any car. They incorporate green silicon carbide crystals through out the tread for ice, they act like sand paper and are as good as studs in most icy condions and better in some. They are a bit noisy due to these and the aggressive tread patern with many sipes. I can tell you these turn my little ti into an ice machine. I am an old Yankee and used to driving in snow and ice, but Richmond can have some nasty ice storms and people here have no clue. I always due my best to avoid them like the plague, so I use back roads, roads they are scared of, etc. I have gone up sheet ice hills that stop AWD Audi's, Subaru's, 4x4 trucks etc. because they don't have proper tires or know what they are doing. They are great in the bad stuff and much better in the wet/dry than any studed tire I have used, better then the squishy ishy sushy soft Bridgestone stuff, better than Yoko's stuff (which I had on my Toyota truck and they are much better overall than Bridgstone), not as good in the dry as my Wintersport M2 Dunlops were on this car...they were also wider at 205/55-16 front an d 225/50-16 rear, but the M2's could not begin to have the nasty stuff traction of the Green Diamonds. I also run a set on Sierra 4x4 truck and they rule there too. My understanding is that Nokian is a great tire...I also have heard rummors that in some European markets they produce a Green Diamond type tire for local consumption...makes you wonder if we are getting the best. Green Diamond was developed in Iceland and cut it's teeth in some pretty hard places. Check them out, if for no other reason to laugh at what a fool you may think I am, but for winter use for me they are my only real choice.
