Try changing back to 15W40 dino oil.

Most likely, there is enough wear in the various parts that make up the 
Vanos unit that the slicker oil is allowing it to make noise.

If you chose to replace the unit, make sure you also replace the 
diaphragm spring on the intake cam, we've had success with that alone 
solving the noise.
