My daily driver is my 01 325 Touring, and it averages ~22mpg, mostly
high-speed local driving (limits are 50mph+ in my area). It's EPA rated
20/29, and my extremes are about 15 (track schools) to 26 (<80mph fwy
trips). I don't think the fuel economy was re-rated after BMW changed
the diff ratio on manual wagons and convertibles to 3:46. My E24 M6 is
mostly a weekend freeway driver, and sees 19-20.

Judging by articles in Euro mags, it seems BMW is concentrating their
fuel economy efforts on their 4-pot gas and diesels, and letting the
larger engines take performance honors. IMO, even their 6-pot diesels
could do better in the economy department, though their performance
figures are what make me lust after something with the new twinturbo 3.0
diesel.

My 2000 328Ci's best gas mileage is 29 MPG, its actual highway rating,
driving north on 101 from Santa Barbara to the Bay Area averaging about 70
MPH. I think it will get slightly better gas mileage going south into LA,
but I've not done a controlled test (full tank to fill up), and the OBC is
wildly optimistic sometimes claiming up to 33 MPG. Cruise control seems
to help quite a bit. It gulps gas going around town, averaging 17 tp 18
MPG.

I just placed an order for an 08 Porsche Cayman, which is said to get 32
MPG on the freeway. I love it: it's slightly smaller than my current
engine, is more efficient, and makes 50 more HP. If they add direct fuel
injection to the 08 model year (no one knows yet), then the mileage and
power will get even better. Pretty darn amazing, even if it's not exactly
an apples-apples comparison.

I've had a Mini non-S with CVT since December. At first, leaving it
in Sport (which holds the tach at 3500 rpm) and having lots of fun, I
was getting 26-27mpg. Since my speeding ticket in Feb :(, I've been
leaving it in Weenie (holds the tach at 2200rpm) and doing no more
than 80mph. I got 30.9 on the last tankful.

I've seen this discrepency too, and I think at least part of
it is the calibration of the mpg function.

This _is_ adjustable withing a certain range (not enough to
compensate for larger injectors).

The thing with BMW engines is an almost unnaturally large
correlation between deeper throttle inputs and lower mpg.

The delta with my 750 is absurd... my daily commute which
has stop-and-go and fun twisty bits brings a horrific
average of 12.1mpg, while a highway trip with cruise control
set at 75-80mph will easily register around 21mpg.

I tried an experiment the other day, "Driving Miss Daisy"
style on the same commute home, watching the mph gauge and
short shifting (and being passed by one-armed geriatrics in
wheelchairs). Average showed 15.6mpg. Awesome! Next
morning, the simple act of starting the car (and the
cold-cycle fuel dump) instantly dropped it to 14.3mph. Ugh!
What to do? Enjoy the fact that it can take 89 octane and
drive it mostly when it's fun to drive.

My '98 M3, with my not-so-light right foot, sees 17-ish,
while a friend's '97, driven mostly the same way, "displays"
23mpg. I don't trust his OBC display as per my opening
statement.

Supposedly, the S54 in the E46 M3 is capable of great
efficiency, one assumes only when driven carefully. I'll
monitor that when Brett finishes up the swap into my E36.

Wow, how do you do that?? Is it mostly highway? I've never gotten
more than 22mpg in any of my BMWs, from the '89 325 to the E36 M3s -
and they had tall-geared automatics*.

That's what I used to get on the 95 commuting from SF to SV. Now I'm lucky

My daily is a '95 M3 w/ conforti software and CAI (similar setup). I
generally live under 4,500rpm and w/ about 80/20 (street/hwy) driving, I
avg. 21.8mpg religiously tank to tank. It's pretty common on E36 M3's,

That's amazing. My old E28 M5 got about 12mpg, if that. I have a 2001 M3
convertible that gulps down gas in the mid teens per gallon. The non-M E46
325 convertible I am driving, the window sticker says 19mpg average, I am
seeing about the same at the pump (18-19 city, 22-24highway). I drove a
2000 M5 for two months, and got about 14mpg (also had a 2002 for a few
months...the same there too), wasn't pretty. How can an M car, almost 10
years old get better gas mileage than a 2004 325 (as noted, it's published
on the window sticker)? Not saying you are wrong or I am right...just
writing my previous experiences.

I just picked up an '02 X5 4.4i. The MPG economy meter rarely touches the
20MPG mark, even at steady state 70MPH cruise. I am absolutely loving the
thing, but I question myself on buying it when gas is now hitting $3 a
gallon again.

The E30 M3 averages around 24-25MPG, with a best of around 28 on the
highway. But for now, I will pay the extra for the poorer fuel economy and
superb comfort the X5 provides.

Hitting? Try $3.47 for regular in the PRC. Makes filling up the Avalanche
a $100 jolt.

But then it's still cheap compared to the UK.

At least diesel has finally sunk down below regular unleaded where it
belongs. I got pretty tired of paying more-than-super the last
couple of years.

Is that mpg calculated by the car or by hand? The car's math can be off if
different size injectors are being used than stock.
