Historically, upper-echelon IT workers have been very liberterian and anti-union.
The two don't have to be mutually exclusive, of course. One can be both libertarian and pro-union. Unions can be (and have been) a great tool for preserving and promoting the rights of individuals against the domination of ownership and upper management.
It's all about strength (or safety) in numbers.
