Subject: grub: won't recognize ext2 partition when there are *fat ones in front
Message-ID: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>
Mime-Version: 1.0

Package: grub
Version: 0.5.93.1
Severity: normal

Hello,

GRUB, when invoked with just 'grub' on a working system, which has an
IBM's IDE hard disk, 15.2GB in size, with this partition table:

Disk /dev/hda: 255 heads, 63 sectors, 1869 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 bytes

Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/hda1 * 1 256 2056288+ b Win95 FAT32
/dev/hda2 257 1869 12956422+ f Win95 Extended (LBA)
/dev/hda5 257 1562 10490413+ b Win95 FAT32
/dev/hda6 1563 1863 2417751 83 Linux native
/dev/hda7 1864 1869 48163+ 82 Linux swap

(printout by normal linux fdisk)

... won't recognize/use the ext2 partition :( I tried 'root (hd0,5)',
but just that causes "Disk read error". I tried to use the completion
(BTW what a swell feature for a boot loader! :), but that caused this:

grub> root (hd0,<pressed_TAB>
 Disk read error

 Possible partitions are:
Partition num: 0, Filesystem type is fat, partition type 0xb
Partition num: 4, Filesystem type is fat, partition type 0xb

 Disk read error

I don't understand what exactly is wrong, but I've had another person
tell me that he experienced the same behaviour - Grub wouldn't read
ext2 partition, and he also had some FAT-like partitions before the
ext2 one(s) in the partition table.

What am I doing wrong?

TIA!

BTW I still haven't managed to get Grub to work, the diskette reports
"Read error" and halt prior to booting (tried two disks, a 1.44M and
a 720K one just in case, but both died)... is there a mailing list
for Grub users where I can ask for help?
