Elpidio, Thank you very much for your proposal. Excellent idea, we need indeed a better structuration of the information in Medical Informatics in Open Source. Furthermore I have the following suggestions: ( 1 ) Permanent web pages For every specialized topic I would like to find somewhere a kind of " home page " containing links to relevant documents and to the messages in the field. This need to be managed by a team of 1 to 5 persons specialized and motivated in each particular domain. That team provide coordination, but must remain " Open " to diverse different relevant opinions, although sometime very controversial. We need somewehre a general table of content for medical informatics in Open Source. I do not mind under which flag that general table of content should sail. By prefrence an international organisation, but one really doing things and not only talking about philosophy. In an Open world there could exist more than one " main table of content ", but please not too many ! Maintaining a good one will be a lot of work. Moreover the existing major international web pages should contain links to the table of content and maybe also to some of to these set sof specialized pages, e.g. from IMIA, AMIA, OSHCA, CARE2X, etc.... >From a user point of view: - I do not like to receive every day small piece of information about every possible topics. But when I want to review a given topic I need to see all the relevant messages and documents from the 3 latest months. - When I am a beginner in a new field, not familiar to me, I need an introductory overview in order to see where to begin. The list of adresses intersted people with their issues of interest and their optional memberships to some other existing organizations, should be public, as far as the persons agree. Moreover we should also have a system of notifications when some new item appear on some list of particular interest to some people known to have interest in it. ( 2 ) A search engine A way to retrieve documents according to a given profile based on multiple criteria. These criteria could include conditions like a not exclusive choice of one or more optional topics, defined by means of keywords, like in your provisional list. - The technical family: e.g. known as particularly relevant for " VISTA ", " CARE2X ", " OpenEHR " However in most cases an issue like patient identification or Problem List would be relevant to everybody, regardless of the group or country. - A date range: e.g not older than 6 monutnhs, ... - Healthcare field: e.g. Family Practice, Cardiology, Nursing, Pharmacy, etc ...... - ........... It is perhaps not yet necessarily to make a search engine. We could use Google with a convention to use some specific crazy "key strings", which could begin by something like " IMIO-XCZMBPK " unlikly to interfere with any other known keywords. However this simple approach could not avoid noise nor spam, nor commercial ads. ( 3 ) Scope The list of topics should be extended to more application issues e.g. - Problem List issues: (one of my topics of particular interest starting from my internal medicine background) Specification of Probleme Lists, links to the relevant observations and to the Services intended to cope with every problem, different "views" on the same common information but presented in a way adapted to different kinds of specialized care providers, ..... - Workflow of "Services ", starting from the generic concepts and going later into the details of every possible kinds of derived " Orders ". Also being able to manage schedulling issues in order to manage these Services. - Access to knowledge, Beginning by standardized interface to the most usual reference tables. - Man-Machine interface, ergonomy, framework of menus, .... - Patient identification, including related issues like how to limit the risk of errors, - Images technologies in healtcare, ....... - Administrative issues: - etc ................................ ( 4 ) Open Market in Healthcare Open Source We need a kind of "Open Market place in Open Source ". Some good web sites already exist, like " Sourceforge ", but it should become more easy to find modules one could reuse in new healtcare enviroments. We need a repository of modules in Healthcare. The description of the concepts. The technical enviroment they are compatible with e.g. XML SOAP, CORBA, VISTA, EIFFEL-OPENEHR, CARE2X, ..... but of course the most important issue is here to be well Object Oriented. Soon or later these technical environments will move to more compatibility than today. In the future we should move in the direction of "Intelligent Agents" to be called from any kind of enviroments ? ........ ( 4.A ) What Open Source Users would like to find in the public domain I think it would be very useful to encourage people to write explicitly what they would whish to have. At the moment they do not know how to find the necessary money to make ik, but we need to know what people are dreaming of. It is anywhay a good exercice to write specifications. ( 4.B ) Providers of " BOUNTIES " Some people and public organizations are willing to pay for the development of some software modules to be set in the public domain. They define what they want and what they are willing to pay for it. People, even commercial organizations, may propose their services. Hopefully the sponsors of bounties will agree with some of the dreamed specifications here above. For example have a look at web sites like http://www.markshuttleworth.com/bounty.html I am now going tomorrow on travel until 7 April, but my son will know where to contact me. As a temporary additional Email address you could use: " [EMAIL PROTECTED] ". Elpidio, which dates do you propose for our encounter in Stuttgart end of April ?
