Greetings! This is the Syracuse Area Rare Bird Alert for the week of 
October 10 , 2011

Montezuma National Wildlife Refuge (MNWR) and Montezuma Wetlands Complex (MWC)
------------


     14 species of shorebirds including the AMERICAN AVOCET were reported this 
week. No new species from weeks past. The AVOCET has been seen throughout the 
week. There have been no reports today of any kind from the refuge.

     LONG-BILLED DOWITCHER

     10/11: The GREATER WHITE0FRONTED GOOSE was again seen at the Visitor’s 
Center.
     10/12:  2 NELSON’S SPARROWS were found at Martens Tract. LONG-BILLED 
DOWITCHERS were at May’s Point Pool.
     10/13: A NELSON’S SPARROW was again reported from Martens Tract.
     10/15: BLACK-BELLIED PLOVERS were seen at Larue’s Lagoon. LONG-BILLED 
DOWITCHERS were at May’s Point Pool.  SANDHILL CRANES and 8 species of 
shorebirds were seen at Puddler’s March.
     10/16: The GREATER WHITE-FRONTED GOOSE was again seen at the Visitor’s 
Center.


Madison County
------------

     10/11: A PINE SISKIN was heard on Ridge Road


Onondaga County
------------

     10/13: 6 late EASTERN MEADOWLARKS were seen in a field in the Tully area.
     1/16: A late RUBY-THROATED HUMMINGBIRD was at a feeder in East Syracuse.


Oswego County
------------

     10/15: A PARASITIC JAEGER and a FORSTER’S TERN were seen at Derby Hill
     10/16: 2 PARASITIC JAEGERS, A LITTLE GULL, and a FORSTER’S TERN were seen 
at Derby Hill. Also seen were all 3 SCOTERS.
     10/17: A FRANKLIN’S GULL was seen at Derby Hill.


Jefferson County
------------

     10/16: A PARASITIC JAEGER was seen at Southwick State Park. A RED 
PHALAROPE was found at El Dorado.
