In my experience it is best to try to stick with some main-stream options. In order to give your client the best service and room for expansion it would (in my opinion) be best to start with something like Access 2000 and upsize to MS SQL when the budget allows.
We have supported very high traffic generating sites with a large volume of READ, UPDATE, DELETE functions. Upsizing to SQL has always been a breeze and clients save money.
