We use codes like adminBean.firstName.null to set errors/informations and have abstracted our user friendly messages to an XML based file (similar to Java resource bundles). This allowed us to change error messages without having to dive into the services just to update some English and lets the copy writer in our company to update messages easily. It also support multiple languages, so added French would be a snap in the future.
