Hello, neighbors, I'm glad Kathleen H. had a good experience with Mike Kelbie to do her roof. However, when we hired him, we had a lot of problems. I believe our new roof is sound. I think they generally do good technical work. However, they do make mistakes, and their customer service and communication is poor. Mike is not actually on site that much. He hires migrant workers that have limited English skills, and we had trouble communicating with them because we don't speak Spanish. If there are any problems, Mike quickly points to a broad liability exclusion clause in his standard contract (paragraph 4 I think).
The weekend after they removed our old roof and before they put the new one on, it rained, and water flowed into a light fixture in our bathroom. This had never happened before. We called them in to look at it. They said it wasn't their fault that it must have been some pre-existing condition. We had to hire an electician to repair the socket at our expense. They tore down and discarded the TV antenna that belonged to our neighbors. When we complained, Mike denied responsibility and cited paragraph 4 (liability exclusion) of the contract. We followed up and he dismissed us again. We asked our neighbors the Olsons to call, and finally he agreed to pay for the new antenna (parts only), and I helped Rollin install it. We asked them to try to avoid getting debris on our backyard garden. They trashed one of our garden beds and he cited paragraph 4 again. They repositioned security bars on one of our windows, without our consent, in a way that made it less secure. We insisted that they put it back. He complained but did it. They also bolted a new drain pipe right on front of one or our painted columns. It's an eyesore, and we wish they'd asked us first, so maybe we could have figured a different way to do it. If you do hire Mike, be sure to read the fine print of the contract and be prepared.
