Note that bash is exiting here!
I have no clue whats going on here...
Something is seriously broken in bash.
Try:
strace -s 1024 -f /bin/bash -c 'if test "`eval echo ~$USERID`" != ~$USERID; then echo "123"; fi'
And look in the output to figure out which process receives a SIGPIPE, and why.
