STOP nothing further. When doing this with squirrelmail or thunderbird I
get a timeout. interactive telnet stays without timeout untill I kill
the process.

I think there must be something wrong with files in homedir of user
boerns, but I do not know which one.

Which files could be impacted used by courier-imap?

Any Idea?

Upon login, there are only a few things that get checked before throwing the first prompt.

• The account's home directory and default mailbox, $HOME/Maildir. Verify that they have the correct ownership and permissions. In particular, there's a somewhat lesser-documented feature that turning on the sticky bit on the home directory blocks that account from logging in, but that should result in an immediate error message. And a mismatch should also result in an error.

• If there's a file called 'loginexec' in the maildir, it gets executed, as a shell script/binary, before the IMAP server proceeds.

• There's also code that purges the trash folder. Perhaps this account has about a hundred thousand messages in the trash folder?

• There's also a check to initialize the FAM api. There have been sporadic reports of various platforms have broken gamin libraries, that result in a hang for 15 seconds, then you get kicked out.

It shouldn't be hard finding the imapd process running under the given userid, and use strace to see what it's doing.

Try waiting 15 seconds, to see if you get kicked out. This would be a new wrinkle – affecting only one userid. Previous complaints were a total fail of Gamin on Debian. If so, the fact that you have it happen for one userid only might offer some hints where to dig further, and figure out what's different about that particular userid (since you're using system users), that's making gamin toss its cookies.
