Is it possible to configure esmtpauthclient so that only messages for gmail
recipients are relayed to Google SMTP with authentication? I could use my
GMail account to login into Google SMTP in that case.

Or, is there a completely different solution to this problem?

You should be able to use esmtproutes to direct all mail to google.com via smtp-relay.gmail.com. In esmtproutes:

gmail.com<tab>smtp-relay.gmail.com,465/SECURITY=SMTPS

Then make a corresponding entry in esmtpauthclient:

smtp-relay.gmail,465<tab>userid<tab>password
